Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment

Snoring is obnoxious. It disrupts sleep and can give you a sore throat. More importantly, though, snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea, a serious and potentially deadly condition. Sleep apnea occurs when a person stops breathing for 10 seconds or longer, and this can occur repeatedly during a sleep session. With snoring, soft tissues vibrate as air passes by, and a sound – a snore – is emitted. The difference is, in sleep apnea patients, soft tissues completely block airflow.
When the brain does not receive sufficient oxygen, it triggers the body to wake. Because a sleep apnea sufferer cannot get sufficient deep, REM sleep, daytime drowsiness is a common symptom. Some patients awaken abruptly, choking or gasping for air. Others wake with headaches or feel irritable, forgetful, and lethargic all day. Sleep apnea can reduce quality of life and negatively affect job performance.
Dr. Holman and Dr. Frazier may talk to you about seeing a doctor who specializes in sleep disordered breathing. Have you heard of CPAP? The acronym stands for continuous positive airway pressure, and it describes a contraption that includes a box where air is generated, a tube to carry the air, and a facemask to deliver air to the body. While many people have found success with CPAP, some are not able to tolerate it.
Dr. Holman and Dr. Frazier offer a simple oral appliance, a snoreguard, worn at night to hold the lower jaw slightly forward. This appliance can be used to reduce snoring. Its position keeps soft tissues from blocking airflow. For severe sleep apnea, a CPAP and snoreguard combination may be necessary. The snoreguard can alleviate snoring and help to open the airway which can lessen sleep apnea. If you want to reclaim restful nights and productive days, ask about a snoreguard at your next dental visit.
