Believe it or not, having bad dental health can negatively impact the way your child performs in school. According to a 2012 study, children with dental problems are more likely to miss school and not do all of their required homework. These problems are also associated with unhappiness, shyness, and feelings of worthlessness. The good news is that preventing and treating these dental problems may increase your child’s chances of academic success. Here are four tips from a children’s dentist to give your little one a healthier smile and an overall better school year.

1. Set Up a Routine

Repetition is absolutely essential in teaching your son or daughter basic life skills. Get them in the habit of brushing their teeth every single morning as well as brushing and flossing right before bed. Establishing this routine while they’re young will make them more likely to continue these habits into adulthood.

2. Make Brushing More Fun

Kids are more likely to clean their teeth if they’re allowed to pick out their own supplies. The next time you get groceries, let them select the products they like best. Whether that involves buying a toothbrush featuring a beloved cartoon character or a toothpaste with their favorite flavor.

It may also help to place a sticker on a chart or calendar for every day that your son or daughter remembers to brush and floss all on their own. Once the page is filled up, let them choose a reward.

3. Pack Mouth-Healthy Lunches for School

The more processed sugars your child eats for lunch, the more fuel the bacteria in their mouth have to create acid that destroys tooth enamel and causes cavities. Instead of candy or juice, pack items that are high in protein and fiber. Cheese, meats, fresh fruits, and milk are all great ideas.

4. Schedule a Back-to-School Checkup

Children (as well as adults) need to attend a dental checkup and cleaning every six months. Taking your little one to theirs at the end of the summer can help them start the year off right with a healthy smile. Additionally, their pearly whites will be shining brightly just in time for yearbook pictures!

Following these tips will do more than give your child a smile they can be proud of. It can help set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles!
